Kuan Yin (Guanyin, Quan Yin) is the Buddha goddess of Compassion. Her name "Kuan Shih Yin" means "Perceiver of the Cries of the World." Kuan Yin hears each tear roll down each cheek, whether we are crying from laughter, fear, or sorrow. Making a commitment to extending compassion toward ourselves and the world, and recognizing that we are not separate from the world, is one way we can honor Kuan Yin in our daily lives.

The Mt Shasta Goddess Temple’s devotional representation of Kuan Yin is set at the magical and picturesque Hedge Creek Falls in Dunsmuir, where our founding priestess saw an image of Kuan Yin in one of the stones, and knew she was meant to create the Temple near this sacred place. In her right hand Kuan Yin holds a vessel containing the sacred nectar of compassion, which she pours out into the waters of the Falls to meet the Sacramento River, which flows out to the Pacific ocean and joins the great waters of the world. In her left hand she holds a willow branch, with which she sprinkles the nectar upon those who call for her aid. Effortlessly, she balances on the writhing back of the water dragon, representing her ability to master wild circumstances, and her divine power of rain and weather magic. Volcanic basalt columns ring the canyon behind her. Basalt is a stone made from lava that cools and hardens quickly, representing swift transformation, courage and grace under pressure. Basalt is also a popular stone for use in massage, so it represents healing and relief.

The Mt Shasta Goddess Temple is committed to honouring the Great Mother through acts of spirit, beauty, and service, and we embrace opportunities to help shape a better world for women. Our annual devotional cycle dedicated to Goddesses from many world cultures invites our membership to reflect on the diversity of the female divine, and our practices and teachings inspire women of all colors, shapes, sizes, and backgrounds to discover the divinity within. In our Temple, we believe that every woman is an earthly embodiment of the Goddess.
